Legal experts offer advice

A PORTSMOUTH legal specialist is urging people who have made Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) to check whether they are eligible for a refund on the fees they paid.

Almost two million people have been overcharged by the Office of the Public Guardian between 2013 and 2017 – causing a stir in the legal profession.

Claimants can expect to receive a refund of up to £54 plus any accrued interest since the registration was made, according to Verisona Law.

So far only 200,000 of the 1.8 million people affected have claimed, meaning an estimated £77 million is still owed to customers.

Lasting Powers of Attorney allow people to appoint a loved one to make decisions on their behalf if they can no longer do so.

Go to www.gov.uk/power-of-attorney-refund to claim online.  Claims must be made by February 1, 2021.
