Marine businesses are booming, says reports

MARINE businesses in the south east of England employ over 9,700 people in careers varying from marine engineers to project managers and naval architects, according to a new report.

This number accounts for 30.9 per cent of all those employed in the UK marine industry (31,600).

The findings were released yesterday, at the Southampton Boat Show, by industry group British Marine.

These figures form part of a wider piece of research that shows the UK’s marine industry in a buoyant state; businesses have been hiring for the last three years, recruitment has increased by 2.7 per cent in 2014/15 and is expected to rise by a further two per cent in 2015/16. In a sign of industry confidence, 30 per cent of businesses expect to recruit over the next 12 months.

Chief executive Howard Pridding said: ‘The marine industry is dynamic and growing. We offer variety, good pay and opportunities to work at leading companies based all over the country. Businesses want to take on more staff and we urge people who are up for the challenge of working in the industry to get out there and help us grow.’
