New carers praise fair for helping to secure them work

The event, which took place in March, found Mark Wilson and Becky Webb jobs with Havant care provider Right at Home.

Around 2,000 jobseekers were attracted to the fair, where 60 businesses offered more than 900 jobs and apprenticeships.

Mark Wilson said: ‘I attended a CV workshop and used the opportunity to speak to different businesses about careers advice. My new powered-up CV got me four interview requests and I decided to join the Right at Home team in Havant.

‘I’m looking forward to a career where you can make a big difference to the daily lives of the clients and your own outlook on life.’

The event was organised by Havant’s parliamentary candidate Alan Mak.

After speaking to the business owner Duncan Cameron, Becky Webb said: ‘Things didn’t work out at my last job so I was looking for a new path. A friend tagged me on Facebook about Alan’s careers fair, so I went and one of the first people I met was Duncan. We had a lovely chat and set a up an interview and it went uphill from there.

‘I am new to caring, but when I came for my induction I found the training very informative and everyone I have met has been so welcoming and helpful. I am enjoying my job for the first time in ages.’

Duncan said: ‘Often people who are very well suited to delivering top quality care services won’t have considered this sector before, so events like Alan’s fair are a fantastic opportunity to explain how the role may differ from people’s expectations, and to demonstrate the range of professional development opportunities that we can offer.’

Right at Home was due to hold an open event for those looking into careers in care today.

Alan said he hoped the event would become an annual community fixture.
