Dan Fallon has already reached member capacity at Renegades Gym in Copnor, which he opened this weekend, and says he is determined to help people get the physical and mental benefit from exercise.

The 37-year-old said: ‘In the navy we were really pushed to our physical limitations and it made us stronger. I was never really someone who was academic but my mentor in the navy got me on to a physical training instructor course and it really gave me confidence in myself.

‘It helped me turn my life around and it was amazing to read about fitness and gain more knowledge about keeping fit which I could share with others.’

After leaving the navy six years ago, Dan, who lives in Portsmouth, set up his own PT business but after friends were left unhappy with the service they were getting at gyms, they asked Dan to train them in a garage.

Dan said: ‘It really snowballed from there and we decided that the garage was enough to train 30 to 50 people. I wanted to make sure it was going to be different from other gyms and that people weren’t just coming here to do 50 reps or whatever but to challenge themselves mentally as well and hopefully they can apply those skills in other parts of life.’

The gym has four PTs and runs classes daily for members for up to a maximum of 10 people. Drop-in classes for non-members will also be available soon.

Dan added: ‘It has been hard with the coronavirus pandemic as we got everything ready before and then we have had to change things about to make things safe like adding bays and tape but honestly more hygiene is only ever a good thing.

‘We have plans for something on the seafront as well so more people can join in but it is only an idea at the moment.’
