The organiser, who would only give his name as Carl, said they had been forced to cancel due to The News’ interference when asked to explain how they could operate in a Covid-19 secure way.

He said: ‘Everything is cancelled. Everything is totally legal and above board. It is not worth the hassle.

‘We are trying to put on social events for a minority. We are not breaking any rules, it is a social occasion.

‘The public is very conscious of Covid-19 and we don’t want to spread that illness around - and it is down to reporters interfering that it’s now off.

‘I have seen how swingers clubs have been attacked in the media. There is a whole community of people who are into a certain lifestyle and like to socialise by meeting and talking, such as the gay community and the LGBTQ community.

‘You are targeting a minority that like a certain lifestyle by pursuing a sensationalist story. We don’t want to be in the public eye as it can be seen as sensational.

‘All our events are Covid safe. The rules are the same as any public venue, this is not a house party, and we are subject to Covid rules such as social distancing.’

But Hampshire Constabulary said: ‘We are aware of a report that a social event has been advertised as taking place tomorrow (Friday, December 11) at an address in Marketway, Portsmouth.

‘Officers have been in contact with the owner of the property, who is not the event organiser, and will be carrying out visits tomorrow to ensure that no large gatherings or Covid-19 breaches are taking place.’

It also displayed the venue’s Covid-19 rules, which include completing Track and Trace, signing waivers to say that social distancing will be maintained and temperature checks before entry.

A spokeswoman said: ‘All businesses and venues that are open are expected to follow Covid-19 secure guidelines to protect customers, visitors and workers.

‘Under Tier 2 rules many businesses need to operate under tighter restrictions.

‘Our regulatory services team monitors the coronavirus safety measures local businesses have in place. When possible breaches of coronavirus regulations are reported to us, we will investigate and take action if a business is found to be breaking safety legislation.’
