Row over wall around Southsea retirement flat complex could finally be resolved

McCarthy & Stone, which is redeveloping the site of the former Savoy buildings, has been locked in a dispute with residents over the matter.

Residents in Alhambra Road, where the wall would go behind, are furious the firm pulled down the one that previously existed there without their permission, which they say was needed as they own the land.

Now McCarthy & Stone will go back before the council’s planning committee on Wednesday, September 14, in the hope it can reach an agreement with residents and win permission to build a new boundary wall.

Should permission be given, the proposed wall would be 55m long and run along the back of numbers 20 to 34 in Alhambra Road.

McCarthy & Stone has also been criticised for sending staff into people’s gardens to put up temporary fences while waiting for permission.

The company defended its actions by saying the work was done to ensure people were kept safe. The planning committee will meet from 1pm at the Guildhall.
