Denmead Grange Care Home is a warm and very welcoming place, they have an open door to their community and like to work closely for the benefit of all. For that reason they invited Ian Quirk, Community Fire Officer of Hampshire Fire Service for a safety talk.

They’ve got to know Ian well, he is a lovely, approachable gentleman, who offers guidance, advice and tips. The talk makes you think, to review what you do at home and to make small changes that can save lives. Ian shared with participants recommendations such as;

Shutting all the doors at night to reduce the spread of fire.

Not running any items that ‘heat up’ (dishwashers, washing machines, tumbles dryers) when you are not in the house.

Switching electrical items off at the wall and not leaving them on standby – (air fryers for example); everything that is powered is a fire risk.

Test all fire alarms monthly

Don’t charge up items (phones, tablets) overnight and never in the bedroom

You can request a home fire safety visit by calling 02380 644000. You can request one if you are over 65 or if you are vulnerable. Details can be found at www.hantsfire.gov.uk/safety/home-safe-home/safe-and-well

Knowing the value of these fire safety tips Denmead Grange obviously wanted to share this knowledge and in turn to invite the community to learn too. Through Denmead Grange Ian has since been connected to several local groups and through these connections these important messages will be shared and awareness will be strengthened.

Abbie Johnston, General Manager of Denmead Grange commented: “We want to thank those in our community who came to learn how to be safer in their homes. We would like to especially thank Ian for the vital work he does but for also coming to meet with us all, the talk was eye opening and an important reminder of how to stay as safe as possible.’

Denmead Grange care home is run by Barchester Healthcare, one of the UK’s largest care providers, which is committed to delivering personalised care across its care homes and hospitals. Denmead Grange provides residential and dementia care for 60 residents from respite care to long term stays.
