Free books given to pupils at Barncroft Primary School thanks to the generosity of shoppers

Free books have been given to pupils at a primary school thanks to the generosity of supermarket shoppers.

Each pupil at Barncroft Primary School in Bedhampton has been given two free books thanks to The Children's Project Charity which works with the neighbouring Asda which collects book donations.

Asda’s community champion, Lisa Whitelock, has been collecting donations of books which resulted in 900 books being handed to the school, with each pupil at the school being able to choose the books which interest them and they want to keep.

Lauren Miles from the primary school said: “We have had lots of lovely feedback from pupils, parents and staff. We even had two parents (Balloons & Beyond) donate the balloon arch in the pictures in order to help us decorate the bookshop.

“It definitely had a great community feel and we were proud of the children for their adventurous choices of book and thankfulness for the books.

“As part of the National Year of Reading, we are very pleased as a school to have been able to gift to our children in this way. Promoting a love of reading for pleasure is one of our top priorities and we continue to carry this ethos across the school.

“Local borough councillor Philippa Gray also joined us for the event and spent time with the pupils enjoying their books.”
