Yet, despite early academic struggles, Berry released his debut novel, Veil of Darkness, on August 4, 2024, and has a sequel, Blood and Retribution, set for release on November 1, 2024.
Berry’s passion for storytelling began not with writing, but with the dream of creating a comic book. "I had an idea, and it was supposed to be a comic," he recalls. However, the plan hit a roadblock when he realized that drawing wasn’t his strength. "After a year of trying, I just decided to develop it into a book instead," he explains. Once he made that decision, his characters and stories quickly took shape, and his love for writing took over. "The hardest challenge was to start, but once I started, I couldn’t stop."

Hide AdThough Berry’s time at Park Community School from 1993 to 1997 didn’t directly shape his writing, he sees his experience as proof that academic performance doesn’t dictate future success. "I wasn’t too bothered about my grades back then, and it didn’t stop me from pursuing my writing later on," he says. For Berry, his F in English Literature is a reminder that traditional education paths don’t always align with personal passions or future careers. His experience challenges the notion that GCSE results determine success in creative fields.
Berry’s Veil of Darkness is the first in a planned series that blends supernatural intrigue with detective noir. Set in the historical and shadowy streets of Portsmouth, the novel follows Detective Nicholas Cain, a vampire who has walked among humans for centuries, hiding his true nature while solving the city’s most dangerous cases. Cain’s struggle to maintain his humanity while dealing with his thirst for blood creates a gripping, tension-filled narrative. The story not only explores the supernatural but delves into themes of justice, morality, and the personal sacrifices Cain makes to protect both humans and his fellow vampires from threats lurking in the shadows.
The sequel, Blood and Retribution, picks up where Veil of Darkness leaves off. Cain and his partner, Marcus Brown, face increasing danger as they confront an ancient vampire council. The stakes are higher than ever, with Cain's family ties and Marcus’s humanity tested against a backdrop of political intrigue, treachery, and the looming threat of old enemies. With themes of loyalty, betrayal, and power struggles, the book promises to keep readers on the edge of their seats as Cain fights not just to survive, but to protect those he cares about.
"Seeing my characters develop and their stories come to life has been one of the most fulfilling parts of the process," Berry says. His books are deeply rooted in rich, complex characters who evolve with every chapter, making each new installment an exciting continuation of the overall narrative. While the supernatural elements provide an exciting backdrop, it’s the personal struggles and emotional depth of his characters that keep readers hooked.

Hide AdBerry’s journey into writing came after years away from school, proving that it’s never too late to pursue a creative passion. "The hardest part is starting," he says. "But once you do, take pride in the fact that you’ve done something. It’s more than most people have done." His advice to aspiring writers is to stop doubting themselves and start writing, no matter their background or academic history. Berry's own journey exemplifies the importance of perseverance and personal determination over formal qualifications.
With the success of Veil of Darkness and the anticipated release of Blood and Retribution, Scott Berry is already planning future installments in the Nicholas Cain: Vampire Detective series. His writing career is just getting started, with more stories set to explore the evolving relationships and darker, deeper mysteries within Cain’s world.
Berry’s story is one of inspiration—showing that early setbacks, whether in school or elsewhere, don’t have to stand in the way of success. His work serves as proof that passion, creativity, and perseverance can create opportunities in the most unexpected places.
