New app to help Hampshire families locate food support over half term

HAMPSHIRE families struggling to feed their children this half term can now benefit from a new app to locate local food outlets offering free meals for children.

After the government announced it would no longer be extending its food voucher scheme for free school meals children to cover holidays, a number of local businesses and the University of Portsmouth have stepped in to fill the void.

The new app, which has been launched by the charity the Food Foundation, will now enable vulnerable and disadvantaged families to identify where they can receive help over the holidays.

A statement from the charity said: ‘This is a new resource and food organisations are being asked to visit the website today and register details of what they are offering in order that vulnerable children and families can find out what is happening in their local area.’

The Landport Community Centre, Duke of Buckingham pub, The British Queen Pub and Paanchi are just a few of the local businesses offering a meal service. The charity said around 1.4 million suffered from food insecurity over the summer holidays.
