Visitors enjoyed activities including creative writing for children, face painting, a quiz and music from the Pompey Pluckers.

Author Pete Adams, known for his Bleunoir novels, also gave a talk and signed books.

Cllr Ellcome cut the special birthday cake and visitors joined hourly tours of the Southsea Archive Repository, which isn’t usually open to the public.

Southsea library manager Dan James said: ‘We are very proud of reaching this milestone and were extremely pleased with the turnout to the event,

‘It is great to see so many people in the library, making the most of our facilities.’
