St Edmund's Catholic School experiences positive GCSE results day

DESPITE students not having had the chance to sit their exams, St Edmund’s Catholic School headteacher, Simon Graham, said it had been a ‘positive results day’.

In recent years the school has been the city’s top performing state school but Mr Graham said he had not yet looked at headline figures as he wanted to ‘ensure all pupils had the correct results’ in the wake of the government’s U-turn.

Mr Graham said: ‘This is a super year group and the results they have received are on the whole in line with what they would have got.

‘I have been pleasantly surprised by how positive the day has been. ‘There has still been the usual celebrations of students going on to the next stage of their education.’

One student celebrating her results is Caitlin Jones, 16, who is now going on to study chemistry, English Literature and history at A-level.

The talented student was awarded seven grade 9s, three grade 8s and a grade 7.

Caitlin said: ‘It has all bee very confusing and so it is a relief to finally have my results.’

Classmate Lily Robson, 16, scored six grade 9s, seven grade 8s and two grade 7s.

Lily said: ‘I felt really apprehensive coming in this morning as I had seen what had happened with the A-levels being downgraded and I didn’t know if the GCSE system was going to work.’
