A Catholic primary school has thrown its heart into fundraising to help the wider community during lockdown.

St Paul’s, which caters for pre-school and primary years, is located in the close-knit community of Paulsgrove.

As well as adapting the way it has delivered school classes for children from two years old to 11, and supporting pupils and their families, the children and staff have put their best foot forward for charity.

Headteacher Zoe Killick said: “We decided to do our bit for Captain Tom Moore’s charity, and set out to raise £100. We are delighted to say we raised more than £1000, which is a tremendous effort from our school community. The children were inspired by Captain Tom, and were really proud to support his efforts with our own charity walk.”

Supporting families

The pandemic has been a difficult time for families and all teaching and support staff wanted to deliver the best care, in the spirit of St Paul’s school mission, Do Everything With Love.

This included reaching out to parents and families to see they had the right support, creating videos as teaching aids and simply to say hello, and increasing communication throughout. Some parts of the school’s catchment are in a deprived area, so the team went the extra mile to ensure inclusivity was delivered across the board.

It’s been a disrupted year for everyone, and even the littlest members of the St Paul’s school community will have noticed changes in lockdown. Zoom calls helped teachers stay in touch, while a nurture group not only helped pupils at home but eased the transition back into school.

“We’ve had a few children who were very worried about returning,” said Mrs Killick. “We’ve allowed them to come back for a short period of time, gently easing them back into the classroom setting, and letting them know how proud we are of them for coming back. Our children are so important to us, and we want them all to feel safe and welcome.”

Already parents around Portsmouth will be looking to choose a school for the 2022 intake, or for a few revising their choices for the 2021 placements. Others may be looking for a nursery placement for this year.
