St Vincent College in Gosport provides special support and guidance to ease school leavers' concerns
The cancellation of GCSEs, formulation of awarding grades and the sudden departure from school life has caused confusion and anxiety amongst young people who should be celebrating their well-earned success this summer.
To help address and support those who find themselves in this difficult situation, St Vincent College in Gosport is providing school leavers with the best possible guidance for their successful progression to college in September, with career and advice services that have been recognised as offering an ‘outstanding’ quality of provision in recent inspections.
Award-winning support
St Vincent College’s Transition and Progression Manager, Alistair Lambon, who won the Futures Award for his services in supporting young people progress to university, employment and future careers at this year’s Hampshire Education Awards, is overseeing all services supporting progression to Post-16 education.
He said: ‘At a time when young people have limited access to the traditional methods of giving advice and guidance, we are committed to proactively putting ourselves forward through a variety of online resources to ensure that every young person has the personal support they need to move forward.’
Alistair added: ‘We moved quickly to reassure all current applicants that their places at St Vincent College are assured for September 2020 and are continuing to conduct digital and phone interviews with the many young people who have recently applied to study with us.’
Andy Grant, Head of College, is immensely proud of the way staff have responded. He said: ‘Despite having to work from home, everyone has pulled together in order to provide young people with knowledge and assurances of the opportunities that await them at college and the future.’
On the frontline
Following many years of successful development, St Vincent College is proud to be recognsied as one of the top providers of vocational education in the country.
‘We are continually impressed and delighted by the success and achievements of our students,’ said Andy.
One recent example success story is that of former student Katie Elliott who, having studied Uniformed Public Services, has just started her career in the police force and, as one of her first duties as a Police Officer, is supporting the response to the social measures to combat the spread of COVID-19, working in local communities.
She explained: ‘The course at St Vincent College showed me a diverse range of what the public services had to offer. It was hands-on, informative and taught the importance of team work, which is what the public services is about. These foundations enabled me to start the career I have always wanted.’
