‘The small number of staff who are affected have been informed and will be involved in discussions throughout the consultation period. All affected staff will be offered every available support at this time. The relevant unions will also be consulted fully during this time.
‘Universities face a highly competitive market. While some areas of study have grown in demand, regrettably others have declined despite sustained efforts to recruit student numbers.’
The news will come as blow to staff after the latest university accounts showed vice-chancellor Graham Galbraith received a £9,000 pay rise in August 2018 along with increases for other ‘key management’ staff.
The spokeswoman added: ‘Any proposed reduction is difficult for everyone involved and the decision to make this proposal has not been taken lightly.’
