Youth speaking competition provides valuable experience

Teams from Cams Hill School and Fareham Academy competed in the Fareham Rotary Club’s ‘Youth Speaks’ contest on January 18 at Fareham Borough Council Chamber.

The competition offers young people experience in speaking on a public 
platform as a member of a team and selecting a subject they wish to present to an audience.

Brian Ray, of Fareham Meon Rotary Club, said: ‘The young speakers are all to be congratulated on their efforts.

‘To stand up in the Fareham Council Chamber in front of a large audience must be quite daunting but they did not show much nervousness.

‘Youth Speaks gives the participants confidence and the opportunity to research a topic and present it.

‘The ability to address an audience is a great advantage and the earlier that young people develop this skill the better.

‘We are most grateful to Fareham Council for allowing the use of the facility for another year.’

Cams Hill’s team of Connor Duffy, Cameron Rumbles and Matthew Trotter won the senior section of the contest with their subject Robots of the State.

The runners-up were team two from Fareham Academy.

Teghan Neat, Thomas Anderson and Charlotte Plummer from Fareham Academy won the intermediate section with the subject Privacy: Who’s Invading Yours?

The runners-up were another team from Fareham Academy.

Mayor, Cllr Mike Ford, was judging alongside Rotarian John Landaw and President of Fareham Meon Club Tony Billings.

Mr Ford said: ‘The standard of presentation was really high with clearly much work undertaken by not only the three members of each team, but their teachers as well.’

The Youth Speaks area final is being held on Monday, February 8, from 6pm at Cams Hill School.
