Portsmouth City Council's transport boss, Councillor Lynne Stagg, has written to colleagues across the city to help identify space that could be offered up to medical staff.

It is thought the spaces could be used either for them to park outside work more easily or so they don't have to worry about finding a space when they come home after a shift.

Cllr Stagg said: 'I've heard of NHS staff struggling to park or having a difficult time getting to work because of parking.

'Thesy are doing extremely important work and we should all be doing what we can to help them in anyway possible. If there are any businesses or schools out there that have got parking facilities they could allow people to use they should let the council know.

'I've identified a few places in my ward. And I am asking ward councillors to have a think about their areas.'

Secondary school Miltoncross Academy has been offering its car park for the use of staff at neighbouring St Mary's Hospital for the past week.

Executive headteacher of Miltoncross, Fiona Calderbank, said: 'The car park is being well used by St Mary's staff.

'We only have students whose parents are key workers attending at the moment so we don't need many spaces for the school.

'We have all got to do what we can.'
