Coronavirus: Nurses at Queen Alexandra Hospital treated to free curries from Portsmouth restaurant

NURSES were treated to an Indian takeaway on Mother's Day as a thank you from a curry house amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Southsea restaurant, The Akash, delivered 30 curries along with rice, naan and poppadoms to a team of on-duty nurses working at Queen Alexandra Hospital on Sunday.

Joint owner of the Albert Road curry house, Faz Ahmed, said the team wanted to express their gratitude for the hard work of the health professionals.

He said: 'The work of those within the NHS is admirable and I am so grateful for everything they do - especially with all that’s happening in the world at this present time.

'Coronavirus is having a big impact on our health system and everyone is working so hard to address those in need, so this gesture is the least we could do.

'We’ve been feeding teams at the NHS for some years now and have provided meals, on us, to encourage and uplift workers in busy times.

'But to deliver food on Mother’s Day was a really humbling moment.'

It comes after restaurants and pubs were told to close as of Friday, March 20 by the prime minister except to provide takeaways.

Mr Ahmed added: 'Even though business is a challenge for us by only being able to do takeaways and deliveries - like many others in Portsmouth - this was all about helping our community.'

A total of 30 curries, 30 portions of rice, naan bread and 40 papadoms were gifted to those on shift at the weekend.
