Covid deaths in Hampshire care homes continue to decrease

CORONAVIRUS related deaths in Hampshire care homes have continued to decrease for a fourth week, new figures have shown.

There were 23 more Covid-19 deaths recorded in the county, showing weekly figures are continuing to decline.

According to the latest data from the Care Quality Commission, between February 20 and 26 there were 21 Covid deaths in care homes in the Hampshire County Council area, with two in Portsmouth and none in Southampton.

This is a drop from the previous week when there were 32 across the whole county and significantly fewer than in prior weeks, including the week of January 23 when there were 117 – the highest figure since records began on April 10.

Nationally Covid-19 deaths in care homes have also decreased with 382 recorded between February 20 and 26 – down from 649 the week before. And between February 13 and 19 there were 893

Overall, Hampshire has been the second-worst hit area in England with a total of 928 Covid deaths in care homes since April. Kent has had the most Covid deaths in care homes with 1,150.

There have been a total of 95 coronavirus deaths in Portsmouth care homes, and 104 in Southampton.

In England the overall total now stands at 28,267.

As reported, all care homes in Portsmouth have now been offered their first dose of a Covid vaccine, with appointments booked for residents to have a second.

The total number of coronavirus deaths at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham is 863.
