Hampshire care homes record lowest number of Covid deaths since December

CORONAVIRUS deaths in Hampshire care homes have hit their lowest levels since December, new figures have shown.

There were 10 more Covid deaths recorded in the county, showing weekly figures have declined for the fifth week in a row.

According to the latest data from the Care Quality Commission, between February 27 and March 5 there were eight Covid deaths in care homes in the Hampshire County Council area, with two in Portsmouth and none in Southampton.

This is a drop from the previous week when there were 23 across the whole county and significantly fewer than in prior weeks, including the week of January 23 when there were 117 – the highest figure since records began on April 10.

The last time Hampshire recorded weekly Covid deaths as low was the week before Christmas, when there were seven in care homes across the county. This then leapt up to 23 between December 25 and 31.

Nationally Covid-19 deaths in care homes have also decreased with 252 recorded between February 27 and March 5– down from 382 the week before. And between February 20 and 26 there were 649 893

Overall, Hampshire has been the second worst hit area in England with a total of 937 Covid deaths in care homes since April. Kent has had the most Covid deaths in care homes with 1,169.

There have been a total of 97 coronavirus deaths in Portsmouth care homes, and 104 in Southampton.

In England the total now stands at 28,543

The total number of coronavirus deaths at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham is 878.
