No new Covid deaths in Hampshire care homes for first week since records began

THERE have been no new care home deaths related to coronavirus in Hampshire for the first time since records began.

In the most recent data from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) care homes in the Hampshire County Council, Portsmouth City Council and Southampton City Council areas recorded no Covid-19 deaths between July 18 and 24.

This is the first time all three areas have reported no deaths in care homes linked to the virus since April 10 when records started.

It matches a national trend as coronavirus deaths in care homes in England continued to fall, with 40 that week. There were a total of 1,698 care home deaths in the country that week, making Covid-19 the cause of 2.3 per cent of deaths.

The Hampshire County Council area remains the highest in the country for the total of coronavirus related deaths in care homes with 447. At one time (July 17-23) there were as many as 89 Covid deaths in one week.

In Portsmouth there have been 38 coronavirus deaths in care homes since April 10. There have been none recorded since May 11.

A total of 62 care home deaths linked to Covid have been recorded in Southampton.

In the week of July 18 there were 66 deaths unrelated to coronavirus in care homes in the Hampshire County Council area, six in Portsmouth and five in Southampton.

Some of the weekly figures increase in later data releases when more deaths from the period are notified to Care Quality Commission.

As previously reported the Portsmouth council-run Shearwater care home in Southsea was 'locked down' last week after a staff member tested positive for the virus.
