Portsmouth care home joins in national clap for Captain Sir Tom Moore

CARE home residents and staff paid their respects to Captain Sir Tom Moore as part of a national clap to pay tribute to the veteran.

The Second World War veteran, who inspired the nation in lockdown by raising tens of millions of pounds for the NHS, died at the age of 100 on Tuesday morning after contracting Covid-19.

To mark his memory, prime minster Boris Johnson called on the nation to join in with the clap for Capt Sir Tom and healthcare workers yesterday evening at 6pm.

Residents and staff from Blue Water Care Home, in Kingston Road, Fratton, took part in the clap.

Residents Joyce Hutchings, Iris Cooper, Emily Britton, Barrie Etherington and Apollonia Alexander were joined by lead carers Aisha Englefield and Wendy Watson.

Hayley George, manager, said the tribute was fitting after their own 100-year-old resident Joyce Lane passed away from natural causes on Wednesday. ‘The clap was for her as well, everyone loved her,’ she said.

‘It was lovely to do the clap and was a great idea. Some of the residents remember him doing the walk last year.

‘We do a lot to support the NHS and this was a nice gesture to a man who did so much for it.’
