Portsmouth exceeds Covid case rate of 200 per 100,000 people for the first time

NEWLY published figures have revealed that for the first time the city has passed the rate of 200 new cases per 100,000 people within a week.

The figures for the week up the end of October 29 showed there were 434 new cases – a rate of 201.9 per 100,000 people – compared to 387 cases at a rate of 180.1 per 100,000 the previous week.

The increase came as the prime minister proposed a second national lockdown which, if voted for by MPs, is due to start on Thursday (November 5).

Blackburn with Darwen in Lancashire continues to have the highest infection rate rate in England, with 1,086 new cases recorded in the last seven days, the equivalent of 725.5 cases per 100,000 people.

Below is a list of rates for other local authorities across the region for the past seven days, all of which show a rise in infection rates:

- Gosport had 116 cases at a rate of 136.7 per 100,000 people, up from 49 cases and a rate of 57.8 cases per 100,000 people the previous week.

- Winchester had 166 cases at a rate of 132.9 per 100,000 people, up from 108.9 cases and a rate of 108.9 per 100,000 the previous week.

- Fareham had 153 cases at a rate of 131.6 per 100,000 people, up from 106 cases and a rate of 91.2 per 100,000 the previous week.

- Havant had 146 cases at a rate of 115.7 per 100,000 people, up from 87 cases and a rate of 68.9 per 100,000 the previous week.

- Chichester had 139 cases at a rate of 114.8 per 100,000 people, up from 90 cases and a rate of 74.3 per 100,0000 the previous week.

- The Isle of Wight had 64 cases at a rate of 45.1 per 100,000 people, up from 39 cases and a rate of 27.5 per 100,000 the previous week.
