Portsmouth in the top third of areas for Covid-19 vaccinations for over-50s
THE roll-out of Covid-19 vaccinations has seen 97 per cent of over-50s across Portsmouth take up a jab, figures show.
Across the city, a total of 64,042 people over the age of 50 have had at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccination.
The figure puts the city in 56th place out of 314 local authorities when it comes to vaccinations for the age group.
In the surrounding towns, Fareham has vaccinated 97.3 per cent of the age range, with a total of 51,178 residents taking up a jab, putting it in 47th place.
In Havant, the rate is at 96.7 per cent with 54,650 jabs administered to the over-50s, while Gosport is at 95 per cent with 32,903 doses given.
For the under-50s in Portsmouth, vaccines have been administered to 33,264 people.
It comes as the government’s vaccine advisers say people aged 18 to 29 should be offered a different vaccine due to evidence linking the Oxford-AstraZeneca jabs to blood clots.
A total of 79 cases and 19 deaths related to blood clots were reported after 20 million doses had been administered - giving a risk of about four in one million of developing a blood clot, and one in a million of dying.
Speaking to reporters earlier in the week, the prime minister Boris Johnson said: ‘These vaccines are safe, they've saved many thousands of lives and people should come forward to get their jabs and we'll make sure that they get the right jabs.’
