Portsmouth residents urged to dispose of PPE properly after reports of gloves 'littering the streets'

Portsmouth City Council issued advice on how to dispose of all personal protective equipment after use to reduce the risk of spreading Covid-19.

A council spokeswoman said: 'Our street cleansing crews at Colas are starting to see more and more latex gloves littering the streets.

'We all need to play our part in keeping the streets clean and reducing the spread of coronavirus.

'PPE gloves and masks should be double-bagged, set aside for 72 hours, and then disposed of in your general waste bin.'

In Portsmouth recycling and rubbish collections are still running as normal as are food waste (in the trial areas), garden waste and healthcare waste collections. Bottle banks and carton recycling banks are still open.

However, bulky waste collections and the Great British Spring Clean free kerbside collection have been suspended. Household waste and recycling centres across Hampshire are closed.

Salvation Army textile collection banks and British Heart Foundation book and CD collection banks in Portsmouth are also closed.
