Roughly one in 25 Portsmouth residents have had Covid-19, data suggests

ONE in every 25 people living in Portsmouth has had Covid-19 at some point since the outbreak began.

From the latest figures as of January 11, there have been 9,530 positive cases of coronavirus since the start of the pandemic in March 2020.

Placed in the context of total population figures, it means roughly one in 25 people living in the city has tested positive, or four per cent.

It comes following suggestions that the national average is one in five people, according to data analysts at Edge Heath.

This makes the city better than the national average, with Portsmouth doing better than other cities such as Manchester, Liverpool and Bristol.

In London, mayor Sadiq Khan declared an emergency last week as Covid-19 cases soared.

For Gosport, it works out at around one in 50 residents getting coronavirus, or 2.7 per cent.

Currently, 3.9 per cent of Havant residents have had Covid-19, as have 2.9 per cent of those living in Fareham.

A further 2.7 per cent of people living in East Hampshire have also tested positive.

The most recent population count in Portsmouth was done through the 2011 census, which put the city’s population at 238,137.

The next census in the UK is set to take place in March this year.
