Southsea seafront roads and car parks shut due to 'large numbers of people gathering'

People are currently banned from leaving their homes as the coronavirus outbreak infects more people in Britain.

Residents can only leave for groceries, commuting if necessary, for exercise, to care for a vulnerable person or for any medical need.

Last weekend saw people flock to Southsea in the sunshine. On Monday prime minister Boris Johnson imposed the stringent rules, with breaches punishable by a £60 fine.

A Portsmouth City Council statement said: ‘The seafront road in Southsea is closed and seafront car parks are closed to everyone other than residents and permit holders because of large numbers of people gathering in the area. This was a joint decision with the police.

We have lots of great parks and open spaces across the city - which are open for people to use for their daily exercise with their family.

‘The children's play facilities and outdoor gym equipment in these areas are currently closed.

‘Our parks will continue to be maintained so that people can continue to enjoy them in line with latest government advice.

‘Everyone needs to follow social distancing rules in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

‘Only travel if it is essential and if you are exercising stay as local to your home as possible.’
