Mark Green was nominated by his patients and colleagues for the Cardiovascular Nurse of the Year category at the annual British Journal of Nursing (BJN) Awards.

The nominations process was organised by his colleague Rosalynn Austin, a research nurse at the hospital, who after supporting Mark with a recent project realised how much he goes ‘above and beyond for his patients’.

Rosalynn said: ‘As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic Mark worked with various teams in cardiology to set up and run an ambulatory clinic for those with heart failure. The primary goal was to support high risk patients, preventing admission, improve quality of life and prognosis.

‘This ambulatory pathway made a massive difference to the care of many patients. It gave them access to expert specialist care at a time when they otherwise may have felt isolated and fearful.

‘For patients already hospitalised, rapid review in this service by Mark has facilitated early discharges and reduced pressure on community services.’

After learning of his shortlisting Mark said: ‘I wasn’t aware that I had even been nominated for the award, so hearing that I’d actually been shortlisted was a complete shock.

‘At the time the focus was to make sure that patients with a diagnosis of heart failure felt fully supported during the pandemic and that they had someone that they could contact if they needed any help. The ambulatory clinic continues to allow us to do this.’

The annual BJN Awards recognises and celebrates excellence in nursing with the winners to be announced at a virtual awards ceremony on March 8.
