Portsmouth sees 264 new coronavirus cases in a week

Portsmouth has seen 264 cases in a week with a new case rate of 122.8, per 100,000 people, in the seven days to October 15.

In the week leading up to to October 8, there was 167 new cases with a rate of 77.7.

Last week Leader of Portsmouth City Council, Councillor Gerald Vernon-Jackson backed Labour leader’s Keir Starmer’s call for a two-week circuit breaker across the country to curb the rising cases.

Speaking to The News yesterday evening, he said: ‘Everywhere is going up and it is really affecting people.

‘It is a serious situation for the whole country.'

Increase in testing does contribute to the rise and it is unknown how many people have been hospitalised.

Portsmouth City Council has confirmed Covid-19 cases in seven schools across the city including St. Edmunds, Priory, Court Lane Infants and Solent Junior School.
