Rowans Hospice to host Best of British quiz in celebration of VE Day

Rowans Hospice has been running Facebook Live quizzes on Friday nights to entertain the community in lockdown and fundraise for its vital services and tomorrow’s (May 8) quiz will be themed ‘Best of British’ in celebration of the 75 th Anniversary of VE-Day.

Craig Willcock, fundraising and events manager said: ‘We are so thrilled our quizzes are bringing the community together for much-needed and light-hearted entertainment.

‘Again, this week’s event is free to take part in and people can play on their own, get a team together with friends, or even get far-flung family members

together.’

The quizzes, which are sponsored by Hartridges Soft Drinks Company in Waterlooville, have so far raised £5,000 in much needed funds for the Purbrook-based charity through online and text donations, which is facing unprecedented financial losses due to having to postpone all fundraising events and close all shops amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Drinks company co-owner Edward Hartridge said: ‘Hartridges is always keen to support Rowans.

Craig added: ‘As we come towards the end of our seventh week in lockdown, we know people are now really feeling the effects of isolation and boredom, so we hope even more people in our community will join this week; most importantly we hope they will come together and text to donate! We are suggesting donating the cost of normal round of drinks at the bar in support of their local hospice.’

The quiz starts at 7.15pm and to join head to the Rowans Hospice Facebook event page. Find the Rowans Facebook Live feed and click the play button in the middle of the screen.

To donate text ROWANSQUIZ followed by the amount you wish to donate to 70450. For example texting ROWANSQUIZ 20 will donate £20.

In 2018 the hospice launched its Silver Jubilee Appeal to raise £7.5m to renovate its facilities.

Phase one of the project, which included upgrading bedrooms, has nearly been completed but further construction will not be able to start due to the financial losses caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
