17 historic Royal Navy Fleet Review photos from over the years

We think you’ll enjoy looking back at some rare historic naval fleet review images we’ve managed to locate from our archives.

Perhaps you recognise some of the ships at Spithead in the Solent?

Maybe you have a relative who served on one of the vessels?

This collection includes the Coronation Fleet Review at Spithead in 1953, Her Majesty the Queen’s visit in June 1977, the sight of thirty-five submarines tied up at Fort Blockhouse, Gosport, for the fleet review of 1908 and a rather rare image of the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert at the start of the Jubilee Fleet Review at Spithead in July 1935.

A fleet review is a gathering of ships observed by the reigning monarch at the time, and dates back to the 15th century.
