Surrounded by the sea of one side and the countryside on the other it is not hard to see why Portsmouth attracts so many visitors each year and why we love our quirky South Coast (largely) island city
We’ve narrowed down the list of things which evoke Pompey our pride to 26 – one for each letter of the alphabet:
9. I is for Isambard Kingdom Brunel
This famous engineer was born in Portsmouth in 1806 and became one of the greatest figures of the Industrial Revolution. He has pubs and roads in the city named after him. Photo: Contributed
10. J is for John Jenkins
The World War Two veteran and longtime steward at Fratton Park, John was definitely one of the best of us. His passing was mourned by the whole city. Photo: Habibur Rahman
11. K is for Kings Theatre
Opened in the early 20th century, this theatre is still at the heart of entertainment in Southsea and Portsmouth - from top comedians to plays. Photo: Tomas Martinez
12. L is for Lively Lady
Used by Sir Alec Rose when he single-handedly circumnavigated the world between 1967-68. It has recently been restored and sailed back to Port Solent in 2018. Photo: Evening Standard/Hulton Archive/Getty Images
