A look back at the life of a Portsmouth aircraft carrier

Portsmouth-based aircraft carrier HMS Invincible played a major role in the Falklands war.

She was launched in May 1977, the seventh ship to carry the name.

She was built as an anti-submarine warfare carrier, but worked alongside HMS Hermes during the south Atlantic conflict as an aircraft carrier.

She was also deployed in the Yugoslav wars and Iraq war. She was decommissioned in 2005 and sold for scrap to a Turkish company in 2011.

The Queen was in Portsmouth in 1982 to greet HMS Invincible back from the Falklands war with her son, Prince Andrew, on board. The News PP4045
