She was launched in May 1977, the seventh ship to carry the name.
She was built as an anti-submarine warfare carrier, but worked alongside HMS Hermes during the south Atlantic conflict as an aircraft carrier.

Hide AdShe was also deployed in the Yugoslav wars and Iraq war. She was decommissioned in 2005 and sold for scrap to a Turkish company in 2011.
