It took about 20 years to complete and opened on May 6, 1942.

In 1930, work started on the adjacent Portsmouth Airport – the site was eventually redeveloped as Anchorage Park.

Part of Eastern Road, which was built in stages, was also used as a race track for cars in its early years.
