Every man remembered in HMS Tiger disaster | Nostalgia

Continuing on from Monday and the sinking of HMS Tiger in 1908, this postcard printed in Barnsley, Yorkshire, not only has the names of those who died but a picture image as well.

It also has all those who survived. I just wonder how the publishing company obtained all the photographs in the days before the help of computers. Not only does it show HMS Tiger but also HMS Berwick about to plough into her.

Isn’t this a marvellous tribute to all those brave seamen from a navy unrecognisable today.

•This magnificent view across Portsea Island was taken on the brow of Portsdown Hill above Cosham. The road immediately below us is Merthyr Avenue with Brecon Avenue to the right.

It is not so much a view that we can see, but what is not there today. There is no industrial estate at Farlington; no motorway cutting across Farlington Marshes; not a tower block in sight. The tallest building is the bell tower of St Mary’s Church to the right distance. The gas holder at Hilsea Gas Works stands alone as well.

Port Creek separates Portsea Island from the mainland far more than it does today.
