Sixty years ago today Britain’s last battleship hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

On August 4, 1960, HMS Vanguard was leaving Portsmouth Harbour for the breaker’s yard at Faslane when she slewed across the harbour and ran aground near the Still & West.

She was pulled off by five tugs and hour later.

Vanguard, the final battleship built by Britain, was in commission for less than 15 years.
