In this wonderfully evocative picture we are in Commercial Road, Portsmouth, looking south.

It is about 1910 and the road going off on the right is Charlotte Street.

Of particular note is the web of interlaced tram tracks in the foreground.

Portsmouth was one of the few cities to adopt this form of track-laying which saved space on narrow roads. A good example can still be seen in Rugby Road, Southsea.We believe the lad standing by the policeman is a points boy who would have been needed at this busy junction.
