As a child she lived in Oliver Road from 1942-1955 when Highland Road, Eastney, was a thriving local shopping area.

Besides Boots and Timothy Whites there was a newsagent, Hannafords the hairdresser and, farther along on the corner of Winter Road, the butcher’s owned by Mr Eaton.

She says: ‘I remember that Oliver Rd had a bomb crater in it where houses had once stood.’

Margaret Lane also dropped me a line saying: ‘It was such a surprise to see the photo of Timothy Whites and Taylors in Highland Road, Eastney, in The News. I worked in the shop during 1962/63.

'I first worked in the shop in Fratton Road (a combined housewares and chemist). After the houseware side was closed and the shop made only a chemist I was moved to the Highland Road shop. There was only three of us in the shop. Another young assistant, me and the manageress. Such memories. Thank you.’
