Whether it’s the disgusting challenges on I’m a Celebrity, surprising acts on talent shows or some Apprentice candidates being a little too sure of themselves, it is watercooler conversation fodder like no other.
This area has had its fair share of stars of the small screen.
Here’s a look back at a few people who have gone on to fame and fortune via television, with shows that range from the big-hitters, to those – such as Splash!, Life on Marbs and How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? – which were slightly shorter lived.

9. Penny Mordaunt
She was a favourite for the job of Prime Minister last summer and is now leader of the House of Commons, but it could be argued that Portsmouth North MP Penny Mordaunt first came to national prominence when taking part in Splash! in 2014 - and performing terrifying-looking dives very competently Photo: ITV

10. Zara Deniz Lackenby-Brown
Zara appeared in the most recent series of Love Island. A former University of Portsmouth student and Astoria nightclub disco girl, she was popular with viewers, many of whom were angry when she was savagely kicked off the island after a recoupling Photo: ITV/Astoria Nightclub

11. Ant Middleton
Born in Portsmouth, Ant is a former Special Forces soldier, Royal Marines Commando, and Royal Engineer in the British Army, who was the chief instructor on the Channel 4 television series SAS: Who Dares Wins from 2015 until 2021.
