The crack News team which went into battle against celebs | Nostalgia

Last Friday I published a cutting which listed celebrities who were due to play in a charity football match against The News at Jubilee Park, Waterlooville, in February 1970.

It was sent in by Pete Cross who has now supplied me with this photograph of the News XI which came from Barry Evans.

The News team, obviously using their Fratton Park contacts, borrowed a Pompey kit. If anyone went to this match and knows the final score, it would be of interest.

Barry Evans has let me have the names of the side which included Ian Darke, who became a well-known football and boxing commentator.

Back row (l to r): Mick Dunford, Terry Langford, Roger Davy, Eric Mayers, Alan Perry, Barry Evans. Front: Mike Walker, Dick Churm, Trevor Whichelo, Tony Simms, Ian Darke.

n Mick Cooper sent me the picture of The Pyramids Centre under construction after the Rock Gardens pavilion was demolished. The photo was taken by Steve Spurgin.

Mick does not know the date of the photograph and neither do I. It certainly brought some changes to the seafront.
