List of people in Portsmouth, Fareham, Gosport and Waterlooville giving homeschooling help

On what would have been the first day of the summer term, The News has put together a list of local help for parents and carers who have been set the task of homeschooling.

Maths: Daily lessons, questions and revision worksheets are all part of what Danny Bohannan, a teacher from Gosport who is currently working in Bahrain, is offering to parents.

Four years of teaching has seen the 27-year-old working in Portchester Community School, Brune Park and St Vincent College before heading out to the Middle East to teach.

Every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 5pm he hosts a free one-hour tutor session aimed at students in Year 9, 10 and 11, with Thursday and Friday reserved for a video with 10 questions aimed at Year 7 and 8.

Story time: Teachers at Titchfield Primary School have been sharing videos of them reading stories to give their pupils a familiar face each day.

Deputy headteacher Seb Olway hopes to post more videos that cover a range of activities.

PE: Help them to run off some energy and gain some new skills with an online karate lesson from Mark Hague, 10, and his younger brothers, Myles, nine, and Riley, seven.

The orange-belt trio have been recording instructional videos, showing other children how to kick and punch and do certain exercises like press-ups and sit-ups.

Food technology: For those who can find flour and eggs and want a cooking lesson for their youngsters, the Storey family in Baffins have launched a Youtube channel to share recipes for rainbow-colour food.

Fareham teacher Rob Baker (I know!) is also offering cooking lessons and hopes to share his love of baking and help the children keep up with some maths.

Sign language: If you want to learn the basics of a new language then look no further as Bedhampton Community Centre manager Caroline Setford has been sharing videos helping people learn some phrases in British Sign Language.

Henry Court Community College assistant headteacher Laura Turvey has set up The Virtual Teacher Facebook page to help parents and teachers share resources.

Mrs Turvey told The News: ‘To me it’s really important children continue to have an education. If they don’t, then there’s potentially going to be a massive gap in learning for these children when schools eventually reopen. As a teacher, I felt I had a duty of care to ensure this doesn’t happen.’
