Five fast food lovers have got their hands on a year of free chicken sandwiches after queueing for over 12 hours in Portsmouth.
Popeyes opened its first branch in the city on Friday, August 21 with 100 free chicken burgers given away when the restaurant opened at 11am in Commercial Road. As well as the free giveaway on the day, the five first customers through the doors also received free chicken sandwiches for a year.
Ryan Godley, 15, from Portsmouth, was the first in queue having arrived at around 10pm on Thursday night with a sleeping bag.
He said: “I think it has been great, not just because of the food but the people I have met along the way. I have met so many cool people.
“I went to Cambridge once and tried Popeyes and the coating is unlike anything else and the chicken is so fresh. It feels nice to be the first person in the queue.”
The restaurant chain has been around in America since 1972 but has only recently branched out to the UK in the past five years. The Portsmouth eatery serves Popeyes’ favourites such as the chicken sandwich, hot wings, tenders and signature chicken wraps while also featuring a limited time menu called Cajun Crunch which is inspired by the bold flavours of New Orleans.
Ahead of the opening, Tom Crowley, Popeyes UK CEO, said: “Portsmouth has a real energy to it, so we just knew we had to bring a restaurant here. We can’t wait to open our first restaurant in the city and welcome the local community through our doors. Right in the heart of Portsmouth, we’re looking forward to showing everyone our world famous Louisiana hospitality and, of course, that unmistakable Popeyes crunch.”
