Q: We grow autumn-fruiting raspberries and have pruned them right down to the ground. Trouble is the leaves turn bright yellow when the stems are two feet tall. We have given them tomato feed and Epsom salts. AS, West Meon.

A: Same thing happened to me a few years ago. It’s a virus. Best way forward is to dig out the plants and get them out of the garden. This is a good time to replace them with Autumn Bliss raspberries. It is essential they’re planted in a different place. If planted now you’ll get an excellent crop this autumn.

Q: When is the best time to lay turf? Are rolls best? BM, Catisfield.

A: Turf can be laid at any time if the ground is suitable. As it’s so wet, leave this job until the end of March. Use scaffolding planks when laying turf. If you walk on planks the surface will be level. Rolls of turf are much easier to lay and the jobs is done quickly.

Q: I want to buy a fuchsia called Coachman for my dad, where can I get one please? VP, Fratton.

A: This very pretty fuchsia is in stock at St Margaret’s nursery Titchfield.
