Q: We are celebrating a special occasion and would like to buy a spectacular tree which will be admired for many years. Your suggestions of three trees will be considered by our committee. LD, Whiteley.

A: I would suggest a walnut as long as it is in a clear space. The reason is that in years to come children will throw up bits of wood to knock the walnuts off the tree. The second is liquidambar which has stunning autumn foliage. The third is a tulip tree, not a magnolia but one called liriodendron.

Q: I have just been allocated an allotment and will take my little ones there frequently. They trip up on nets so I wonder if a scarecrow will keep the pigeons off my crops? SK, Copnor.

A: Yes it will, but it’s a good idea to move it around. Scarecrows are more likely to do the job if some of the clothing moves in the wind. I was just thinking of the fun your children will have when helping you to make one! I might even make one myself.

Q: My lawn has patches of white mould, sample enclosed, what is this please and how can I cure it? AP, Farlington.

A: This is a nuisance in very good quality turf such as bowling green turf. Your lawn must look wonderful in the summer. You need a specialist to deal with this fusarium disease. I have sent you the details of where to find the right people. You will find it is not expensive and the treatment will be totally effective.
