Bursledon Windmill gets £10,000 grant

THE only working windmill remaining in the area has received a funding boost.

Bursledon Windmill was given £10,000 thanks to the Tesco Bags of Help initiative.

The supermarket teamed up with Groundwork to launch the scheme, which saw grants – all raised from the 5p bag levy – being awarded to different projects.

Bursledon Windmill is the only working windmill in Hampshire and the only working one in England with an all timber wind shaft.

As a result of a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and additional funding from Hampshire County Council and, it was restored in 2015 by the Hampshire Cultural Trust.

Janet Owen, chief executive officer of Hampshire Cultural Trust said: ‘We are tremendously grateful to the public for sharing our vision and passion for improving the grounds and access to Bursledon Windmill.

‘As a heritage site we want to create the opportunity for as many people as possible to see and experience this unique and iconic windmill in action.’
