Construction students aregiven building masterclass

Students from Fareham College made a trip to Bordon where Barratt Homes is working on a new development.

Staff from the housebuilders hosted the visit at New Quarter for Bricklaying and Construction and the Built Environment courses.

The students were split into three teams and took part in the Development in a Day workshop, which takes students through the entire development process from finding a suitable piece of land, obtaining planning permission, tendering for sub-contractors and supplies, sales and marketing, construction and finance.

At the end of the workshop the students met the site manager who discussed his career path and the work of a site manager.

As part of the workshop, four of the Level Three bricklaying students have been offered a work experience placement, which follows on from the success of the last bricklaying student from Fareham College who was offered an apprenticeship two weeks into his work experience with Barratt.

Community liaison manager Anthony Dimmick said: ‘We were delighted to give the students experience of the whole build process.

‘We have a strong commitment to developing the next generation of housebuilders and this was a good opportunity to meet students from Fareham College.’

Construction and Built Environment Lecturer Steve Gilder added: ‘The students found the exercise really interesting and useful.

‘The task brought to life all the individual elements that they have been studying during the completion of their respective courses.

‘It was also a valuable Q&A session with site manager Phil Cripps who was able to provide a real insight into life on site.’
