A WOMAN has denied killing an infant.

Nicola Brown, formerly Nicola Long, wept at Winchester Crown Court as she denied murdering Jake Long, who died at 19 days old.

Brown, 42, also denied two counts of grievous bodily harm with intent against the same child, who died in 2014.

During the brief hearing yesterday Jason Brown, 43, denied a charge of causing or allowing the same child to suffer serious physical harm.

Both defendants, of Agincourt Road, Portsmouth, were released on bail following the hearing.

Prosecutor Nigel Lickley QC said the trial is expected to last up to four weeks.

A reporting restriction banning the naming of the deceased child was lifted by Judge Keith Cutler following an application by The News.

Both defendants, who appeared in the high-security dock flanked by dock officers, spoke only to enter their pleas and confirm their identities.

The pair were charged over the infant’s death by detectives in Hampshire police on June 13.

Judge Cutler adjourned the case for the trial, which is due to begin on Monday, November 28.

The case will be heard at the same court with a high court judge presiding.
