Crimes recorded by Hampshire police fell last year - but here are the offences that increased

CRIMES recorded by Hampshire police fell by one per cent between September 2018 and September 2019, latest figures show.

A total of 159,808 crimes were recorded by Hampshire Constabulary over the 12 months, compared to more than 161,000 the previous year.

Crimes classed as stalking and harassment rose by 35 per cent – the highest increase of any type of crime in the county.

The figures from the Office for National Statistics, released today, show 12,545 of the offences were recorded.

Robbery saw the second-highest spike, 22 per cent, followed by offences related to the possession of weapons, which rose by 17 per cent.

Drug offences saw an increase of 15 per cent, while residential burglary and violence against people went up by 4 per cent respectively.

Of the latter, violence with injury decreased by three per cent and violence without injury fell by one per cent.

The statistics show bicycle theft was the type of crime which fell the most across Hampshire, dropping 16 per cent.

Shoplifting and vehicle offences also reduced, by 10 per cent, while criminal damage and arson went down by six per cent.

Nationally the total number of offences recorded by police forces increased by five per cent, but the National Police Chiefs’ Council lead for crime, Chief Constable Andy Cooke, said the rate of national crime 'remained stable’, with people 'still very unlikely’ to become victims.

He added: ‘Tackling violence is a police priority and our tactics are working.

‘Intelligence-led stop and search, weapons sweeps and effective targeting of habitual knife carriers have led to 17 per cent increase in the number of people arrested for possession of a knife.

‘The further fall in charging rates is concerning, but not surprising.

‘In the past decade, we’ve dealt with more complex crimes and increasing demand while our resources fell.

‘Changes to crime recording mean we now record more crimes that have no realistic prospect of conviction, which also affects the statistics.

‘With 20,000 new police officers coming in the next three years we will be more proactive and target persistent criminals who inflict misery on our communities.’

Like Hampshire, national stalking and harassment offences also saw the biggest spike across the country, going up by 28 per cent.

Sex offences rose by two per cent in Hampshire, compared to a three per cent rise across the country.

The figures exclude fraud offences.
