Driver stopped in Cosham for damaged tyre 'spat at police'

A DRIVER pulled over by police for having a damaged tyre forced police to use a spit hood restraint.

The incident happened on Sunday at around 1am in Havant Road, Drayton, when roads policing officers stopped a dark blue Ford Mondeo.

Posting on Twitter when asked if the team was okay, officers said: ‘A little roadside wash with alcohol gel sorted it all out.’

They had previously tweeted: ‘One detained and spit hood required.’

Spit hoods were previously only used in custody. Chief constable Olivia Pinkney allowed officers to use them on the streets from March 2017.

It comes as a man has been charged over the incident and is due in court in September.

A Hampshire police spokesman said: ‘Officers stopped a dark blue Ford Mondeo just after 1am on Sunday, July 12 over concerns relating to the condition of one of the vehicle's tyres.

‘Worthmore Munyeza, 35, of Blount Road, (Old) Portsmouth, has been charged with two counts of common assault of an emergency worker, criminal damage and failing to provide a specimen for analysis.

‘He has been bailed to appear at Portsmouth Magistrates' Court on September 8.’
