Elderly woman targeted in robbery bid linked to drug-dealing

AN ELDERLY woman was approached by two men who stood over her in a suspected attempted robbery, police said.

The woman was on the corner of Haslemere Road and Heyshott Road in Southsea, Portsmouth, at 9.30pm on June 25 when she was approached in an incident believed to be linked to drug-dealing.

The woman had her purse out at the time and a witness spoke out to warn off the men.

Officers have since stepped up patrols in both uniform and plain clothes.

PCSO Steven Burden said: ‘It is believed that their intention was to commit a robbery but we are unable to identify the female involved.

‘If anyone has any further information please can you contact 101.

‘There is a possibility that the above incident is linked to drugs.

‘Several reports have been made already in relation to drug-dealing in the Heyshott Road area.

‘If anyone sees or hears any suspicious activity in the area please contact us immediately.

‘We are currently stepping up high our visibility patrols in the area as well officers conducting operations in plain clothes.’
